Set in an unnamed city that is nestled beneath the ominous bulk of a mountain range, wars are waged across the airwaves by guerilla broadcasters who battle with one another to get their memes and messages out. They roam the streets and the surrounding hills with portable satellites and hijack the antennae of the handful of powerful "official" broadcasters and the remnants of the once-great People's Information Network.
Alex Guerra, a pirate broadcaster who has recently split up with his old crew, learns about the horrific death of a woman, Roisin Kennedy, whom he was recently involved with and launches a meme war against those who seek to cover up her death and the reasons behind her potential murder. Soon other unknown agents are fighting hard against his broadcasts, launching their own memes to crush his and showing that whoever is doing this is extremely powerful.
As Guerra continues the battle he revists his memories of his time with Roisin but begins to wonder how accurate they truly are - but will he be able to figure out what is fact and what is fiction before he spirals too deeply into a world of anarchists, terrorists, freedom fighters and energy barons.
GUERRA deals with many of the issues surrounding us and our relation to the mass media - how it changes and controls us and how we can change and control it. It also deals with the idea of 'propaganda of the mind' and how we can edit and change our own ideas and memories just as the media might seek to edit and change our opinions.
Current Status - June 2009
This novel currently stands at just under 110,000 words and the first draft is basically complete. Everything is written but I'm going to go back and revise certain scenes and sections based upon the way the story went although I'll save any major rewrites for the second draft. I've already got a list of edits and changes I want to make for that draft so I'll probably step back for a few weeks, crank out some short stories, then get through the second draft as quickly as possible. Usually, aside from a few minor changes, that will be my final draft and then I'll see about agenting it or whatever.
